Driven by curiosity and built on purpose,
this is where bold thinking meets thoughtful execution…

A portrait inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's painting style, created by Pepin François Gisel Surmeier, in April 1911, with a wax seal at the bottom.

Pepijn had always had a special interest in the painting techniques of historical artists. As a very young boy, during a visit to the Musée du Louvre, he sat for two hours, completely focussed, on his knees, making a drawing of the Mona Lisa. A friendly attendant allowed him to sit right at the front and kept other visitors on a distance.

For his graduation at the Scottish St Andrews University, he wrote a thesis about Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting technique. “I started a project in which I created several paintings using the techniques of various old masters, including Leonardo Da Vinci. When I saw May 2, 2019 would mark the 500th anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci’s death, it seemed a fitting moment to unveil the painting.”

He created a painting that is not a copy of one of Leonardo’s works, but something that could hypothetically have fit within his oeuvre. Pepijn based his approach on scientific analyses of Leonardo Da Vinci’s paintings. “Da Vinci is known for his technique in which he uses soft colour transitions to bring forms forward out of a dark background. For this, he uses several layers of paint placed on top of each other.” He also researched clothing styles from the relevant period in order to capture the historical atmosphere.

Painting of Jesus Christ with long brown hair and beard, wearing a green robe. He holds a blue book with a shield emblem on the cover. The background is gold with a halo around his head, and red text on either side reading 'San Dato' and 'Ando Rest'.

Buon Fresco: The Demise of Typhon

Haaren, 2 januari 2013

16 year old high school student Pepijn Suurmeijer starts his channel ‘Let Art Come Alive’

Fresco is a mural painting technique where water-based pigments are applied directly to wet, fresh lime plaster. As the plaster dries, a chemical reaction fuses the pigment into the wall, making an incredibly durable part of the structure itself rather than just a layer sitting on top.

There are three approaches of which Buon Fresco is the true, classic method where painting is done on freshly laid, wet plaster. It requires working quickly before the plaster dries. Every day a part of the work hás to be finished. Therefore we speak of ‘Giornata’ . Historically the technique was perfected during the Italian Renaissance by masters such as Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and Raphael.

“A fun challenge…”
Pepijn wanted to express his creativity by means of fresco painting. His aim was to design and realise a Buon Fresco, using the same materials as available in that time. He called it “a fun challenge” and documented every step as part of his final exam project at Maurick College.

Caricatures

Pepijn became a member of the editorial staff of the Maurick school newspaper. He further developped his skills to make cartoon drawings and surprised both family, friends and schoolstaff with these humorous drawings!

Manga

In his ‘early teens’ Pepijn started to draw Manga pictures. In those days his school notebooks are full of Manga drawings in which he practiced all kinds of characters, each with its own distinct facial expressions.
